SNAP-SpLD is an online, digital profiling tool that identifies 20 specific learning difficulties in learners before providing personalised learning strategies and resources. We spoke to the teacher and SENCO at Melling St Wilfrid's C of E Primary School in Carnsforth, Lancashire about why they love SNAP-SpLD.
The Challenges
As a small primary school in the middle of the Lancashire countryside, adequately assessing learners was unaffordable. Quite often, a specialist teacher or EP would need to carry out a formal assessment for the school to identify specific or underlying learning barriers.
How SNAP-SpLD helped?
SNAP has enabled a broad range of assessments which provide clear indicators of difficulties. It also enables school to work with parents and opens up opportunities to work with them for the benefit of their children."

The triangulated approach, represented by three questionnaires in SNAP-SpLD, has provided clear indicators of learning barriers, as well as engaging parents/carers in their learner's education. The questionnaires have also revealed the scope of learning barriers that were hidden under the surface.
The Core Profile has helped visualise and explain learning barriers as well as helped track improvements. And, the tool engaged learners throughout the school.
The Results
By using SNAP-SpLD, Melling St Wilfrid's C of E Primary School cost-effectively:
- Improved communication with parents or carers
- Increased ability to show progress
- Boosted teacher knowledge and their ability to provide personalised support
What the school say
SNAP-SpLD has helped us to either identify or clarify the pupil’s learning barriers. It’s helped to provide clear evidence to parents using the graph, of areas of difficulty (and strengths) that they haven’t previously identified.
The comparison graphs help us to see clearly any improvements the pupils have made. It also gives a good indication - when strategies or interventions are not working. Because of the nature of the probes, it’s a good benchmark to demonstrate progress. It’s given teachers a clearer picture of what are the specific areas to focus and target support/provision.
The assessment is clear and easy to use. The children enjoy completing the assessments."

Would you recommend SNAP-SpLD to other schools?
"Yes. Because it gives a good overall picture of the learner, it gives a good opportunity to open discussions with parents/carers about the child and provides clear information for the staff and parents."
