About Us

We make it easier for everyone to unlock a new world of learning.
About us

Our Story

After 150 years in education, there’s one thing we’re certain about. No two students learn the same way. That’s why our approach to teaching begins by recognising the needs of individuals first. We believe every learner should have the opportunity to reach their full potential. So instead of a one-size-fits all approach, we provide teaching and learning products and services that work for each individual teacher, parent and student. Our mission is to help every learner reach their unique potential, by empowering those who teach them.

Our History

The global education landscape has undergone significant changes over the years and so have we...

Hodder & Stoughton - 1868

Matthew Hodder and Thomas Stoughton founded a publishing company in London, focused on books that would inspire and educate.

Hodder Education - 1906

The educational arm of Hodder & Stoughton first published resources for ‘technical education’ in the 1920s, understanding that advances in education must require new textbooks.

Hodder Gibson - 2002

Founded in 1880 by Robert Gibson, the leading educational publisher in Scotland joined the family in 2002. We remain committed to delivering tailored support for teachers and learners in Scotland.

Philip Allan Publishers Ltd - 2006

Philip Allan was the original home of our GCSE and A level magazines, and our first Professional Development programme delivering teacher workshops and student revision.

Galore Park – 2013

Founded by Nick Oulton, Galore Park focused on entrance examinations for Independent and Grammar schools. These practice, revision and textbook solutions are continually updated and available from Hachette Learning.

Rising Stars – 2015

Founded by Andrea Carr, Rising Stars has an innovative and customer-focused approach to supporting curriculum and assessment teaching within primary schools. Shortly after Rising Stars joined, we launched the ever-popular Reading Planet scheme.

Singapore - 2017

Singapore’s education system is known for its academic rigour and distinctive approach to learning. In 2017 we added a range of resources to our portfolio to support the Ministry of Education and supplemental market.

TeeJay Publishers – 2019

Created by Tom and John Strang in 1994, TeeJay Publishing is the leading provider of maths resources in Scotland, with over 95% of schools loving the quality and approach. Since the TeeJay series joined, we have expanded into supporting English in Scotland too. You can browse TeeJay resources here

Illuminate Publishing - 2021

Founders Rick and Clare Jackman and Peter and Saskia Burton created a successful and distinctive list of resources to support UK qualifications, focused on WJEC and key A-Level subjects. With key authors, such as Cara Flanagan, the resources continue to thrive.

John Catt – 2021

Since 1959, John Catt Educational has been a highly regarded professional development publisher, earning the trust and loyalty of thousands of teachers around the world. Today, we continue to publish high-quality guidebooks, magazines, and professional development books. As of 2025, John Catt is now known as Hachette Learning Professional Development.
