How ATT Secondary Schools are using SNAP Maths to identify and address the root causes of maths difficulties

During Spring 2026, ten Academy Transformation Trust (ATT) secondary schools screened  their students with SNAP Maths standardised assessments and began to implement SNAP Maths Fluency Boosters with students identified as low in accuracy and fluency in maths-based competencies.

Schools varied usage from whole-cohort screening (up to 220 students) to screening of lower attaining groups or targeted use with small SEND groups.

Key findings

Seven out of ten of the ATT schools used the SNAP Maths Fluency Boosters and said that they would recommend to other schools. All ten schools reported that SNAP Maths screening assessments supported teacher judgement.

Participating schools also reported that SNAP Maths:

  • Identified the root causes of maths difficulties: All ten schools reported that SNAP Maths assessments reflected teacher judgement while providing clarity about the underlying causes of difficulty.

  • Enabled more targeted support: Diagnostic profiles helped schools move beyond identifying low attainment to planning tailored interventions based on each learner's needs

  • Empowered SENCOs to make evidence-informed decisions: In SEND contexts the assessments strengthened professional conversations and enabled the creation of  comprehensive support packages

  • Improved confidence and fluency when used consistently: Schools using SNAP Maths Fluency Boosters regularly (typically three times per week) reported the most significant improvements in pupils' confidence and fluency in foundational maths skills, “particularly with increased confidence over basic number concepts.” (SENCO feedback)

  • Increased pupil engagement through visible progress: Pupils responded more positively to the interventions when they could track their progress through the Fluency Booster graphs

  • Identified maths anxiety: Teacher and pupil questionnaires helped schools better understand emotional as well as cognitive barriers to learning  “There was a clear correlation between weak ability and pupils being detected as having maths anxiety.” (Westbourne Academy)

  • Provided a practical, easily-implemented solution: Schools praised SNAP Maths for its ease of use, clear reporting and ready-to-use assessments and interventions

Participating in the Snap Maths impact study has been a really valuable experience... The insights gained through trialling SNAP Maths will help inform our ongoing approach to identifying and addressing gaps in mathematical understanding across our secondary settings.

About SNAP Maths

SNAP Maths is a digital diagnostic maths assessment for ages 6-16 that goes beyond curriculum-based maths assessments and enables the identification of specific barriers to maths learning, including maths anxiety. Following assessment, schools can deliver targeted support including Fluency Boosters and ready-made strategies.
