We all recognise that interventions are necessary to boost and close the gaps, but how can we find a programme that is just right without trying out numerous ones first?
Finding the perfect interventions that save teacher time and are correctly pitched is a challenge that teachers and assessment leads face.
We explore the clues of a poorly pitched intervention and share how to find the complete intervention programme that is the perfect fit.
What are the clues of an ineffective school intervention?
There are several clues that a primary school intervention may be ineffective:
1. Several year groups using the same resource.
How frustrating is it when you have spent time planning and finding resources for an intervention, only to be told by the child that they have done it before? Wasting precious time and creating a disengaged learner.
2. Spelling and answer mistakes.
You would be surprised how common this is! Confidence in the quality of the intervention resource is essential. Teachers don’t have spare time to safety check for spelling, grammar and answer mistakes.
3. No learning objective and outcomes focused on.
Without identifying a learning objective and aimed outcomes, it becomes an intervention for intervention's sake. High-quality intervention programmes for primary schools offer learning objectives and clear outcomes to structure the sessions.
4. Unconnected interventions.
When interventions are delivered as a stand-alone approach, resources are often broad and vague. Unconnected interventions reduce the impact on learner development and progress.
What does a good intervention look like?
When choosing intervention programmes and resources, the ingredients must be just right. Not too hot or not too cold – just like Goldilocks’s porridge, right?
A good intervention for primary schools should:
- Offer resources that are designed to reduce cognitive load.
- Be easy to access for all teaching staff and monitorable by the assessment lead.
- Have units that are tailored to the age and need of the child and assurance that it has not been covered before.
- Be accessible for any staff member to deliver regardless of subject knowledge in that intervention.
- Aim to build discussion and independent learning skills.
- Be tailored to gaps in knowledge, identified by using high-quality assessments for interventions.
