After the success of the first year of Changing the Story, we are proud of the findings from the second year of the programme.

Changing the Story is a primary school reading programme from the National Literacy Trust and Hachette UK, supported by our Reading Planet scheme. The initiative aims to raise literacy levels and reading enjoyment in disadvantaged primary schools in the UK. Participating children take part in regular reading sessions designed around Reading Planet books and eBooks.

The 2021-2022 report showed that Changing the Story helped to raise reading attainment and engagement. We are thrilled that the 2022-2023 programme has also had a positive impact.   

Data from PiRA tests indicated significant improvement in pupils' reading ability with the percentage of pupils who were below the national average decreasing from half (48.9%) at the start of the programme to 1 in 4 (23%) at the end. Additionally, the percentage of pupils who said they enjoyed reading 'very much' doubled from 21.9% before taking part to almost half (46.9%) after taking part. Find out more about PiRA tests here.

Changing the Story continues this academic year with new and returning schools. We look forward to working closely with the National Literacy Trust, Hachette UK and the participating teachers and children as part of this fantastic initiative.
